Windows Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack works on top
of English Windows Professional edition (namely Windows 2000
and XP). MUI pack adds language resources to the base
operating system and does not modify any core system binaries.
As a result, one of the major benefits of deploying Windows
MUI is the world-wide single rollout that eases the
administration of the operating system, including the
application of English hotfixes and Service Packs (SPs) which
are released first. Microsoft will strive to maintain MUI
functionality in spite of the fixes in Windows Service Packs,
and to avoid separate hotfixes and SPs that are specific for
MUI environments.
Windows XP SP2
This document complements the release notes for English
Windows XP SP1. You can find SP1 download links, the release
notes for SP1, and the list of fixes included in SP1 on the
Microsoft Windows Update Web site. (You must be connected to
the Internet to visit this Web site or any other Web site to
which this document refers.)
Upgrade and Installation Notes:
- All users of Multilingual User Interface
Pack (MUI) should download the English version of XP
SP2.
- Microsoft Windows Media Player may be in
English after installing XP SP2
XP SP2 includes Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series and
after installing XP SP2 Windows Media Player may be in
English. In order to localize Windows Media Player again, you
must download the Windows Media Player 9 Series MUI package
from Download
Center
- Microsoft Windows Movie Maker may be in
English after installing XP SP2
Microsoft Windows Movie Maker may be in English after
installing XP SP2 XP SP2 includes Microsoft Windows Movie
Maker 2 and after installing XP SP2 Windows Movie Maker may be
in English. In order to localize Movie Maker again, you must
download the Windows Movie Maker MUI package from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=32711
- Help and Support Center (HSC) is not
updated in MUI systems
XP SP2 includes a Help update and after installing XP SP2
on MUI systems some Help topic will be in English and HSC
won't include the new topics. In order to localize them again
and get an updated HSC, you must download one of the following
Help Update MUI packages according to the Windows MUI system
that you have:
Windows XP SP1
This document complements the release notes for English
Windows XP SP1. You can find SP1 download links, the release
notes for SP1, and the list of fixes included in SP1 on the
Microsoft Windows Update Web site. (You must be connected to
the Internet to visit this Web site or any other Web site to
which this document refers.) After you log on to the site,
click Documentation, and then click Documentation Home to see
a list of documents that pertain to SP1.
Upgrade and Post-Installation Notes:
- Using Windows XP SP1 integrated version
instead of XP SP1 patch download or update CD.
If you use the Windows XP SP1 integrated version to apply
SP1, please change both the Current User's UI (User Interface)
language and the Default User's UI language to English prior
to running setup. Minor effects, such as multiple items in
Start menu, might appear if this precaution is not taken.
- Use the new MUISETUP.EXE included in XP SP1
to uninstall any MUI language. For installing MUI after
applying SP1, either version (the original or the one in XP
SP1) of MUISETUP.EXE can be used.
You can find the new MUISETUP.EXE under a XPSP1 machine's
%windir%\MUI folder or from XPSP1 update CD.
If you use the MUISetup.exe from the original MUI CD to
uninstall MUI after applying SP1, some critical MUI files will
be removed from the SP1 system.
"xpsp1res.dll.mui" includes all resource updates for a
particular UI language. The old MUISETUP.EXE will remove this
file for the removed language. Removing this file will cause
the newly added UI strings in XP SP1 to be displayed as
English under the MUI language setting.
If you accidentally use the old MUISetup.exe to remove a
MUI language, please re-install XP SP1 package to restore the
removed files and re-add the same UI language support to the
system again.
- Set DEFAULT user UI language to English if
you want to un-install SP1 from a system running MUI. This
applies to East Asian (Chinese Simplified, Chinese
Traditional, Japanese, and Korean) UI languages
only.
If you uninstall Windows XP SP1 from an MUI system when the
system locale and the shell user interface (UI) language
matches the default user interface language, but the default
UI is not English, the font link registry key is removed, thus
breaking the fontlink feature. Problem is noticeable because
some system fonts and East Asian fonts will not display
properly. This problem is fixed if you run MUISETUP.EXE
again.
- If you install MUI after XP SP1, a pop-up
with the following text is displayed in case low disk space
is detected:
"Files that are required to run windows properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system
stability windows must restore the original version of those
files. Insert your XP Professional Service Pack 1 CD
now."
Problem is caused by the old MUISETUP.EXE replacing the new
one, and Windows File Protection (WFP) can't find a copy of
the new MUISETUP.EXE in the DLLCACHE folder. User has to
insert the XP SP1 CD to get the new MUISETUP.EXE.
Known Issues:
Help and Support Center (HSC):
After installing XP SP1 some parts of the Search results,
Set Search Options and Upload driver information pages in the
Help and Support Center (HSC) will display in English on MUI
systems. This is due to fixes included in XP SP1. MUI users
can download the Windows XP Documentation Update outlined in
Q327405
that fixes the localization issues with the HSC pages
introduced after applying XP SP1 and restores their UI
strings. The documentation update also helps you understand
how to configure your Windows XP-based computer to make it
more secure. This update package is available for MUI
languages that have localized Help, namely - German, Japanese,
Korean, Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Arabic,
Hebrew, French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Brazilian,
Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Russian, Czech, Polish, Hungarian,
Portuguese, Turkish, and Greek.
Windows Messenger:
The Windows Messenger in Windows XP is version 4.0. Thus,
the MUI resources included in MUI Pack for all languages are
for version 4.0 as well. Since Windows XP's release, Windows
Messenger has been updated and new features and user interface
(UI) strings have been added. The Windows Messenger included
in Windows XP SP1 is version 4.7.041. Go to http://messenger.microsoft.com/support/winxpSP1.asp
to download the MUI add-on package that updates Messenger's
MUI resources for this version.
Automatic Updates Tab in System Object in Control
Panel:
The Automatic Updates tab under the System Object in
Control Panel (accessed via System in Control Panel; or Start,
right-click on My Computer, select Properties, and clicking on
the Automatic Updates tab) will display in English after
installing XP SP1. It will automatically change to the User's
UI language in 24 hours if the automatic update is enabled.
The box beside "Keep my computer up to date" has to be checked
for the UI language of this tab to change. Otherwise, it will
remain in English after installing Windows XP SP1. It is
recommended to have Automatic Updates enabled for optimal
security and relaibility as Automatic Updates will go to the
Windows Update web site, download the Critical Updates and
Service Packs and, depending on your pre-set preferences
during the Out Of Box Experience setup, automatically install
them or prompt you to begin the installation process.
Windows 2000
Service Pack 3
Some of the UI in the Add/Remove programs applet will
revert back to English after applying Windows 2000 SP3. You
can obtain the fix via your support channel. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813859
for more details. This issue will be fixed in Windows 2000
SP4.
Adding MUI Support for Windows Components Downloaded from
the Internet
If you download new Windows components from the Internet
that are shipped outside of Windows Service Pack CD, you will
need to download the corresponding component's MUI update
package to add MUI support for them. This is because most new
components introduce new UI resources into the binaries, and
they may be translated to the MUI languages. The MUI packages
for these new components, if they are available, will include
the new resources.
If you download newer versions of Messenger, remember to
download the MUI add-on packages as well that updates
Messenger's MUI resources to match the new release. Otherwise,
Windows Messenger will display the English UI. Newer MUI
add-on packs for Messenger will be available at: http://messenger.microsoft.com/support/changelang.asp.
The Direct X 9.0 package includes language resources for 14
languages. They are English, German, Japanese, Traditional
Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil),
Czech, Dutch, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and
Swedish (same as the languages to which Direct X 9.0 is
localized). Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx90.asp
to download.
- Microsoft .NET Framework
Redistributable
Currently, there is no MUI pack for .NET Framework
Redistributable. Most users will rarely see strings/messages
from .NET Framework appear on Windows XP desktop. If you need
localized strings to appear, you can download the localized
Redistributables at http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?url=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files/027/001/829/msdncompositedoc.xml |
